No, I haven't had too much of the New Year's punch. I truly believe that 2009 can yield wondrous things because many people are kind and good and behaving like decent humans out there in this great big not-always-so-scary world.

It's true that none of us can undo the economic mess, stop a war, clean up politics, arrest gang violence or improve the weather, at least not single-handedly. But each of us can notice and promote all the good stuff around us...which is what Inspired Mother is all about.

To prove my point to the believers of the all-is-doom-and-gloom, I did some research. This involved four days' worth of the local newspaper and a pair of scissors. I was a little disappointed as the do-good stories were, in fact, buried in the back of the paper. However, after I paged through the mayhem I DID clip a number of pieces about ordinary people (and many, many students) being creative, making do and making a difference.

Among this group is a man who collected money from his neighbors to provide housing for families of critically ill children. In addition, a talented woman has turned her cake-baking hobby into a lucrative business to supplement the family's income. A cancer survivor has developed a line of fortified foods for others with the disease; and surgeons have stopped the seizures and improved the life of a nine-year-old girl. Add to this dozens of schools who are supporting missions in our country and abroad. And did you know that the Nashville Zoo has tactile exhibits designed for blind patrons? How cool is that?

So please join me in noticing the good happening in our world! To get the ball rolling, next week Inspired Mother will post a story on a mom making strides in pediatric cancer research and news about a nurse who saved a stranger's life while working in her garden. Soon you'll also find advice from our career experts for moms returning to the workforce. As always, we'll point you toward the best books and films to boost your attitude and inspire your spirit. And we promise to make you laugh. Wait ‘till you see what author Jodi Neelin has prepared for IM readers!

Resolve to join Inspired Mother as we look for the good in 2009. It's out there, ladies. I promise.
