It's July 4th. Though it's gloomy outside in my part of the world, it's beautiful to wake up in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I hear birds chirping. The occasional popping sounds come only from manufactured fireworks packaged in red, white and blue. The kids can play in the rain without fear.

Why do bad things happen to good people?

A friend of mine asked me this very question tonight, and of course I have no original insight to ease her pain. Instead, I borrow the best-or at least the most soothing-explanation I've heard from the writings of Pope John Paul II.

Desperately seeking good news

I made the mistake of turning on the TV today.

This just in: The world's oceans are being depleted of oxygen! And this happy news comes after reports of murder, bank robberies, natural disasters and tragedy of epic proportions. Oh, and fires. Many fires. Some caused by arson, too. Bad guys are all around, you know.

Schools out

It can't be that time again. Oh, but the discarded backpacks in the hall, stacks of school papers everywhere and the sudden jump in grocery bills indicate that it is so. School is out for summer.

You're either in panic mode, denial or in love with the idea of having kids underfoot.
