Too Much Thinking

"There IS such a thing as too much thinking," is a phrase I now know to be true. My grandmother passed this strange wisdom to my mother, who passed it to me. I not only say it to my own children at times (who take it out of context to suit them), but yesterday I actually derailed my own overactive mind with this phrase. Perhaps "not thinking" more often could improve my memory.

"I'm one-hundred-and-one," she said proudly. I gasped at the little lady sitting in the scooter. Really, how can you respond to that comment? We should all be that fortunate.

After this sweet woman almost ran over me twice while moving her motorized contraption in reverse, I'd helped her reach a jar of pimentos in aisle 8, then a box of tissues in aisle 12. I felt like we were becoming good friends.

No, I haven't had too much of the New Year's punch. I truly believe that 2009 can yield wondrous things because many people are kind and good and behaving like decent humans out there in this great big not-always-so-scary world.

Freaking Out At Christmas: A Sure Cure

How many people are experiencing quickened heart beats this time of year? It's either the overdose of caffeine, loud Christmas carols, or over-the-top social schedule (more often of my children these days) that does it to me every time. My entire being screams for quiet.

And this is exactly what we all need to give ourselves, right about now.

No Show Snow

The forecast called for snow, then sleet, freezing rain and ice. The distinction between these last few items is still unclear to me but together they usually mean one thing to millions of school children: Snow Day.

Now for those newbies among us, The Cardinal Rule for snow day anticipation is never, ever trust the forecast. Do the homework. Make lunches. Go to bed on time. Completing these tasks increases your chances of using that new sled.
