Adventures Down Under

The first weekend of December is project time in our family. While most folks decorate or shop--or even rest--we usually tackle a huge home improvement project which results in no water or power (or both), paint fumes and/or drywall dust.

But this year was a bit different. We didn't exactly build up or tear down, we excavated. We cleaned the basement, or as we have coined it, "the black hole."

Date night at the movies is so rare for us that I felt like a foreigner in a strange land. The absence of our usual Friday night shuttling shuffle felt odd, like leaving the house without my purse.

Life without Electricity

CandleManDo children today understand real-life science?

Can they apply book knowledge to reality? Do they grasp how the discoveries of Franklin and Edison have affected their everyday lives?

My kids can tell you about Tesla and Watts, explain circuitry and name the components of the atom. They learned this is in school, you know. That fun little "all about electricity" kit Uncle Jeff provided years ago also gave them a good head start. Thanks, Jeff, by the way.
