With all the talk lately about illegal immigration, it's easy to overlook those who follow the prescribed steps to attain legitimate U.S. citizenship. Though the near nightmare in Times Square enhances the wariness of an already prickly population, the vast majority of those who seek refuge in our country do it for one reason: freedom. They yearn for it because they have lived without it.

Two years is a long time to wait for a good laugh and a big piece of cake. Ok, I got a whole lot more than that from last week's Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop at the University of Dayton, dubbed "The Funny Convention" by my family. Three days packed full of information and a new outlook on what I want to do when I grow up made the adventure well worth it.

I believe that television sucks the soul out of the viewer. My children know this all too well as I say it repeatedly. Inappropriate advertising aside, my husband and I endorse news watching, cooking programs, historical documentaries and yes, sports. And for two weeks every four years, we not only accept sports, we embrace it.We are Olympic junkies.

Groundbreaking news from scientific researchers: Teenagers tend to lack something in the judgment department because their brains are not fully developed. That's right. Until our offspring reach their mid-twenties, they lack the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex.Apparently one needs this part of the brain to realize that turning off the ignition while driving is a bad idea.
