Rediscovering Grown-Up Time

The face of back-to-school days is changing. Well, it's changing in my house at least. Used to be that the end of summer caught me by surprise and I'd scramble to fulfill our "wish list" before the first school bus rumbled up the street. Play dates were planned. We'd rush off to the swimming pool. Maybe we'd fit in a long weekend away. I'd invite the neighbors for a cookout and we'd watch the kids catch fireflies and play Ghost in the Graveyard one last time.

Khaki-colored Wisdom

In my washing machine right now is an extra-large load of clothes, all khaki-colored or brown. Seriously, when did "neutral" become a color family?

I've never felt so boring.

Escape From Summer

Two weeks into summer vacation it has become painfully clear that we have to get the heck outta town for at least a few days.

We must quickly escape from the herding groups of teens that gather nightly, cell phones in hand, to eat large quantities of food and plan their next adventure. Sometimes they swiftly enter and exit with nary a word.

Things that give me nightmares: crafts, decorating, sports (in which I must participate), and math of any kind.

Bad memories abound here, as I have not an ounce of talent in any of these areas. Among the worst is the sports category. I was a PE flunkie. Seriously, in high school the teacher paired me with the other most uncoordinated student so we could play tennis together and not inconvenience the entire class. One semester, the ball was never returned over the net between us. Not once.

Extraordinary, Ordinary Women

People driving in cars, captured for but a passing moment, are fodder for the imagination of the astute observer.

Have you ever looked at the facial expressions of individuals at the wheel? Ever wondered what they're thinking? What are their worries? Why are they laughing?

I tend to dream up lives for these folks. The woman with the frown at the stop light looks so serious. Perhaps she is worried about her sick child. The man talking animatedly on his cell phone is certainly arguing with his wife. The kid who just raced through that intersection is dangerously close to missing his curfew.

Everybody has a story.
