We spent another gorgeous day together, my daughter and I. Now aged four and a half, she is such a good friend of mine already, and we have so much fun hanging out. We'd spent the day at the Enchanted Forest in Salem, going on rides, watching a play, panning for treasure and winding our way through the darkened corners of the dated attractions under a majestic forest canopy of moss-covered trees.

bearThe utter delight of holding my newborn daughter made me think the ordeal of labor had been worth the trouble. The relief of having her outside my body rather than inside whitewashed the memory of those long hours. It did not take long, however, to realize that the physical release of baby from womb was only the beginning of a process that would last a lifetime. As she grew, each new phase of life required me to labor at letting go.

heartDuring my years as a school principal, my zeal sometimes got the best of me. In one instance, upon learning that most of the children in our elementary school had never been on a train, I arranged for an all-school, 18-mile train ride. Students, faculty, staff and volunteer chaperones excitedly boarded the train on a beautiful spring morning. The train slowly pulled out of the Amtrak station--after a two-hour delay.
