truestoryofthe3littlepigsBrowse through the juvenile reading section at your local library or bookstore and you can easily get lost in the myriad offerings of contemporary children’s authors. We all recognize the classic Dr. Seuss collection, and most of us grew up reading about Peter Rabbit’s adventures courtesy of Beatrix Potter. But which more recent books are destined to be classics? Alice Pope, Managing Editor for Writer’s Digest Market Books touts Jon Scieszka’s growing collection as some of the best on the shelves. Her own toddler loves Trucktown Smash! Crash!, but for older kids check out The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, the award-winning The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales or Math Curse.

Because of his contributions to literature for youth and his ability to relate to children, Scieszka was recently named the first National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature by U.S. Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. You can learn more about Jon Scieszka and his work on www.jsworldwide.com. You can also check out Scieszka’s own book recommendations at www.guysread.com the website for his nonprofit literacy-based organization.
