The Exergen TemporalScanner™ temporal artery thermometer provides an easy and accurate way to take your child's temperature in seconds. With a quick swipe to the forehead, the scanner measures the body's arterial temperature (the temperature of blood flowing from the heart). Unlike with a typical digital thermometer, temperature readings from a temporal artery thermometer are not affected by drinking, coughing, talking or mouth breathing.

After an IM reader recommended the model, we checked out both the company's claims and the recommendations of the Society of Pediatric Nurses and American Academy of Pediatrics. We discovered that temporal artery thermometers are generally quite accurate, although there is some disagreement on the use in young infants, so ask your child's pediatrician about this. For parents simply trying to choose a thermometer for the family, this appears to be superior to oral, axillary and tympanic methods of temperature assessment. The down side is price as the Exergen TemporalScanner is more expensive than the average drugstore digitial model.
