Have you ever really examined the drug store collection of Mother's Day greeting cards? With stylistic bad poetry, they present the image of sweet, gentle mothers who are always there for you. The card mom never complains, never tires, is ready at a moment's notice with wise motherly advice and kind ways that will be remembered and "treasured" (always treasured) forever.

I'm not that kinda mom.

Honestly, the card mom is the Blessed Mother herself. None of us will ever reach that height of perfection in this life. The creative mind that can come up with a realistic Mother's Day card that actually doesn't offend the recipient could make it big.

Aside from "You're the best mom in the world" (aren't we all?), I have recently considered what my own kids could write if they put some serious thought into it. Hmmm.

How about, "You're wacky but we love you. We know you're tired and confused a lot but you have some cool moments. You're also an ok cook and we usually have clean underwear so thanks."

What they should write, however, if they had the wisdom of a lifetime: "We know that you're trying really hard and that you love us more than we'll ever know."

Come to think of it, this last sentiment applies to all of us moms. Happy Mother's Day to all of you Real Moms!
